When Leaves Fall, Obedience Blooms

Odette

Throughout life, we’re presented with lessons that shape who we are. Some come gently, others fiercely, but all hold the potential for transformation. For me, one of the most profound and life-altering lessons has been learning obedience to God. Initially, obedience seemed simple enough—a matter of hearing His voice and following. But as time went on, I realized it’s not just about hearing; it’s about surrendering my own plans, my fears, and my desires to His higher calling. It’s a lesson that asks me to trust, even when I can’t see the way ahead.

There’s a saying: “A sheep knows God’s voice.” It’s a beautiful truth. But hearing and following that voice aren’t always easy. I’ve had moments when God’s call on my heart felt as clear as day—moments when He nudged me toward choices that required me to step out of my comfort zone or into the unknown. And in those moments, my heart wavered. I’ve questioned, delayed, and sometimes even resisted because of fear or my own vision for my life. But obedience isn’t about understanding every step; it’s about trusting the One who guides us through each step, knowing He sees the path in full even when we cannot.

The interesting thing about obedience to God is that it’s deeply personal—only you can truly understand the prayers you’ve prayed and the conversations you’ve had with Him. Imagine this: God places something on your heart, and instead of feeling confident, you find yourself questioning, “Did I hear that right?”In your uncertainty, you turn to a trusted friend, pastor, or mentor. You share what’s been stirring in your spirit, carefully explaining what you think God is asking of you. But instead of clarity, you’re met with doubt. Maybe they look at you like you’re overthinking, or perhaps they gently suggest, “No, I think you should do this instead.”Even with their advice, that feeling in your heart—the one you can’t shake—remains. Deep down, you know exactly what God has told you to do. It’s in those moments that you realize seeking validation from others won’t change the truth of what God placed in your spirit.

Let me share a quick story with you, Bloomers. As the holiday season wrapped up, I had set aside some money just for me—a little treat after all the hustle and bustle. I was clear with myself: this money wasn’t for bills, responsibilities, or anyone else. It was for me. Now, here’s the thing: every year, as the calendar winds down, I make it a point to sow a seed—a gift dedicated to the coming year as an act of faith. It’s something I’ve done consistently, but this year was different. I couldn’t figure out where the seed would come from. And so, in one of my quiet moments with God, I asked, “How much should I sow?” What happened next caught me off guard. A brief thought, almost like a whisper, came to mind: “Give the money you set aside for yourself.” I’ll be honest with you—I ignored it. Completely. I told myself, “That can’t be right. That money is mine.” But the voice lingered, gently nudging me to trust. Still, I wasn’t ready to let go.

Fast forward to my prayer group meeting a few days later. Everything that was shared in that meeting confirmed what I had been resisting. Every word spoken pointed to the money I had set aside as the seed I needed to sow. And just to drive the point home, the exact amount I had set aside was mentioned in church as an example of what some people might give.

I couldn’t help but laugh to myself. I knew God had been speaking to me all along, and there was no denying it anymore. During the service, I finally confessed to the group what I’m now sharing with you. Ultimately, it all comes back to obedience. That inner nudge, that unshakable gut feeling, is often God’s way of saying, “Trust Me. Follow Me.” And as hard as it may be to tune out other voices, what matters most is being faithful to what God has spoken to you.

Disobedience, in God’s eyes, is likened to witchcraft—that’s the weight of its reality. Yes, I know obedience can be incredibly hard at times, but we are blessed to serve a forgiving God. He understands our struggles and knows just how difficult it can be to walk in obedience, because He’s witnessed the challenges of our human nature firsthand.

Obedience to God has been the most humbling and, without a doubt, the most challenging lesson I’ve faced. It has taught me that surrendering control doesn’t make me weaker but instead leads me to a greater strength—a strength I can only find in Him. I’ve learned that through obedience, I’m protected, guided, and refined. And though it’s not an easy journey& one I’ve failed countless times before (only human), it’s one that has filled me with a peace that I couldn’t have found on my own path.

Bloomers, I encourage you to take heed to this lesson, even when it feels daunting. Obedience to God is a journey that will stretch you, but it’s also one that will bless you beyond what you could ask or imagine. It’s a path that brings true freedom, as it roots you deeper in God’s love and purpose.
